When it comes to doing dishes there are a few important things to know when it comes to washing different materials. Many delicate items such as crystal glasses can only be washed by hand. Others such as bamboo can’t be soaked in water or you will end up with a few problems. Here are some common dish item materials and how to wash them efficiently.
Glass, Crystal & Delicate Porcelain
These dishes are usually wine glasses and cups. They should be washed first with no other items. They should be dried with a dish towel after being rinsed to avoid water spots.
Wood & Bamboo
These are usually cutting boards and cooking utensils. You shouldn’t submerge wood items in soapy water while trying to clean them. This makes them absorb too much water and they can retain bacteria and also loose moisture. Instead don’t submerge them and use a wet soapy cloth to wipe them clean. Rinse quickly afterwards and air dry them. Wood utensil may need periodic oiling to renew their material.
Ceramic, Plastic & Regular Porcelain
These materials used for most regular dishes. These can all be washed together. Allow them to soak for a few minutes to dissolve food and stains. Rinse and dry them in a regular fashion.
Metal
This is material is commonly used for pots and pans. These dishes should be washed last and soaked to remove stuck on food. Often they need scrubbing with a scouring pad to thoroughly remove any food particles. Improperly washed pots and pans can cause prepared food to go bad and potentially cause food poisoning.
